locating a lost computer
Today (2013-11-01) a colleague couldn't locate a computer. We knew which network it was in, we knew what it was called, yet it wasn't where it should have been.
It seemed an impossible task, until it dawned upon me that there may still be a way.
After logging into the host, we saw who the regular users were, but this was not enough to tie it to a single desk.
So something like this solved the issue and told us right away where it was:
cat /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-686-pae > /dev/dsp
You may not have good old legacy sound devices like /dev/dsp
at your disposal, you may need to use a similar means with pulseaudio such as:
pacat /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-4-686-pae
which is part of the pulseaudio-utils
package on debian.
